Converted!
Currently lighting up ATYP as part of Sydney Festival until January 25, Converted! is a brand-new comedy disco musical that’s equal parts hilarious, heartfelt, and empowering. Created by Vic Zerbst (they/she) and Oliver John Cameron (he/they), this show combines toe-tapping disco beats with an important message about identity, belonging,
and the power of queer love and joy.

At the heart of this dazzling production is Maya Wolfe, played with radiant charm and emotional depth by Meg Robinson (she/they). Maya’s journey from lonely teen to someone learning to embrace her true self is both hilarious and deeply moving. Robinson’s vocals are nothing short of stunning – strong, soaring, and hitting you right in the core. They leave you laughing one moment and sobbing the next, perfectly capturing the emotional rollercoaster of Maya’s story.
Teo Vergara (they/them) is captivating as Bone, the rebellious camper with a heart of gold. Bone is the kind of character we all wish we’d had during our own coming-of-age journeys: fierce, caring, and unrelenting in their fight for what’s right. Vergara’s vocals pack an incredible punch, blending rawness and grounded emotion that adds layers of complexity to Bone’s character. Their performance is electric, bringing Bone’s determination
and warmth to life in every scene.

Melody Kiptoo (she/they) delivers a standout performance as Sammy, a character whose ace representation on stage is both refreshing and much-needed. Kiptoo’s voice is crystal clear and utterly soulful, and Sammy’s openness and relatability make her a fan favourite.
As Denver, Redd Scott (they/them) brings a deep well of emotion and soul to the stage.
Their vocal performance is smooth and deliciously rich, adding layers to the
show’s infectious musical numbers.
The camp’s kooky and suspicious counsellor, Ms. Newsome, played by Cassie Hamilton (she/her), is an absolute scene-stealer with a perfect balance of humour and charisma. Helen Dallimore (she/her) and Nat Jobe (he/him) as Mrs and Mr Doctor are delightfully over-the-top, while Teo Persechino (he/they) as Horace and Ashley Garner (he/him) as Kyle/Silent Greg add their own brand of humour and energy to this dynamic ensemble.

A special mention must go to Scarlet Lindsay (she/they) and Paul Leandre Escorrido (he/they) as the on-stage swings. Lindsay, who also serves as Dance Captain, is magnetic, commanding attention with every perfectly executed move, while Escorrido’s presence and energy add an extra spark to the show’s incredible choreography.
Speaking of choreography, Jeremy Lloyd (they/he) has created movement that feels effortless yet deeply intentional, capturing the disco vibe without ever overwhelming the story. Hayden Tonazzi (they/he) direction balances the show’s humour, poignancy, and heart beautifully, ensuring every impactful moment lands with full force.

Converted! is a raucous, joyful celebration of queer identity and community, with a fresh and vibrant soundtrack that will have you humming for days. While the show has amazing bones (pun intended) and plenty of room to grow, it’s already a shining example of the kind of bold, new Australian work we need more of – fun, poignant, and unapologetically empowering.
A solid 4-star triumph! Don’t miss your chance to catch this
disco delight at ATYP before it wraps on January 25.
